1. The resort creates an urban area of massive tourism at the heart of Divjaka-Karavasta National Park. While the city of Divjaka has approximately 10 thousand inhabitants, the resort will accommodate every day 18 thousand visitors. This is a typical case of massive tourism and destructive to nature.
2. The resort destroys the ecologic functionality of the wetland ecosystem. The wave-breaker foreseen in Toka e Vdekur (Core Area of the National Park) will cause in the beginning sedimentation of the outer Karavasta lagoon (Godulla e jashme) and later on sedimentation of the inner lagoon (Godulla e brendshme). Therefore the lagoon will dye and the fishery sector too. Sedimentation at the wave-breaker will be subsequently followed by erosion of Divjaka beach and Spiaxho lagoon. The latter is Core Area of the Park and the most important habitat for birds and other wildlife groups. The wave-breaker is the most destructive intervention in the Park.
3. The 2400 apartments foreseen to be built at the heart of the National Park will be sold and then used permanently. Our legislation categorically forbids the building of new apartments in the Park.
4. The resort covers core areas of the Park despite our legislation forbidding it.
For all the reasons above, the civil society calls upon the Albanian Ministry of Environment to not approve this project of massive tourism. This would be the beginning of the end for all the protected areas and nature in Albania.
But the joint actions of the civil society are encouraging. The prompt reaction of the secretariat of Ramsar and Bern Conventions and our partners from Albania and abroad just increases our commitment for the protection of the public good.
OUR EFFORTWS WILL GO ON. THE CIVIL SOCIETY IS DEMONSTRATING THE BEST MATURITY AND COURAGE! WE WILL PROTECT DIVJAKA FROM THE DESTRUCTION!!!
